Homecoming week is one of the most exciting times on campus, with nonstop events and celebrations.

It is also a time when we have hundreds of students, alumni, and community members on campus. We want to ensure that homecoming is a safe experience for everyone, and we want to make you aware of the following important safety and security measures effective for all homecoming 2025 activities:

Parking

  • The HGA back parking lot (between doors 4 & 5) will be closed beginning Thursday, October 16, and will reopen on Sunday, October 19, 2025.

  • All vehicles must be moved by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, October 17. Vehicles not moved will be towed at the owner’s expense.

  • Only residential students with vehicles registered through the Department of Public Safety may park in the Gillespie Hall lot.

Residence Halls

  • Visitation will be suspended from 8:00 a.m. Monday, October 13, through 5:00 p.m. Sunday, October 19, 2025.

  • Residential students should keep doors locked and avoid propping open exterior doors.

Clear Bag Policy

To create a safer environment and expedite entry into events, a clear bag policy will be in effect:

  • Permitted bags include:

    • Clear plastic, vinyl, or PVC bags not exceeding 12” x 6” x 12”

    • One-gallon clear plastic freezer bags (Ziploc or similar)

    • Small clutch bags (approx. 6.5” x 4.5” x 6.5”)

  • Exceptions will be made for medically necessary items (subject to inspection).

  • Prohibited items include backpacks, purses larger than a clutch, briefcases, cinch bags, luggage, computer bags, camera bags, or any bag larger than the allowed size.

  • All working personnel and media are subject to screening and bag checks.

Prohibited Items

  • Harris-Stowe is a smoke- and tobacco-free campus. Smoking, e-cigarettes, pipes, cigars, hookahs, and water pipes are not permitted.

  • Possession of marijuana, illegal drugs, alcohol, firearms, dangerous weapons, or knives is strictly prohibited—even with a concealed carry permit.

  • Glass bottles are prohibited at all events.

  • Prohibited items cannot be stored at entrances. They must be taken back to a vehicle, residence hall, or discarded. The University is not responsible for items left behind, lost, or stolen.

Additional Safety Measures

  • Increased security will be present at all events throughout the week.

  • Attendees are encouraged to carry valid identification (HSSU ID, driver’s license, etc.) at all times.

  • Report suspicious persons or activities immediately to the Department of Public Safety at (314) 340-3333 or (314) 280-9971.
